Entrants in the Best Cordless Impact Wrench Shootout

AC Delco Tools sent their ARI2002 1/2” cordless impact wrench, kitted with two 4.0 Ah 20V batteries and a charger. AC Delco Tools is the only impact wrench kit that also includes an auxiliary handle.

Bosch entered the HTH181-01 that included two 4.0 Ah 18V batteries and a charger. For testing, they also included the new 6.3 Ah battery, which we used for the shootout.

DeWALT provided the DCF899P2 kit, which includes two 5.0 Ah 20V batteries and charger.

Ingersoll Rand sent the W7150-K22 ½ impact, including two 5.0 Ah 20V batteries and a charger.

MAC Tools is one of the tool truck brands, and they delivered the BWP151-M2 kit, including two 5.0 Ah 20V batteries and charger.

Makita entered the XWT08 with two 5.0 Ah batteries and charger.

Matco Tools was our other tool-truck brand that provided their MCL2012HPIWK impact wrench kit, including their 4.0 Ah 20V battery and charger.

Milwaukee Tool is the only manufacturer to enter two tools in the high torque shootout. The first of which is the 2763-22 first generation, which includes two 5.0 Ah 18V batteries and charger.

Milwaukee Tool‘s second high-torque in the challenge is the 2767-22, also with the two 5.0 Ah 18V batteries and a charger.

Determining the Best Cordless Impact Wrench

It’s not all about power. While power and performance play into our formula, we also take into account value, ergonomics, features, and more. In the end, our charts, in-use photography, and videos should validate the objective results that determine the outcome. Okay, we know our audience, and we know what you want. We’ll keep from dilly-dallying any longer, and we’ll start with the knockout punch, right out of the gate.

Performance

The performance side of the equation breaks down into two sections: power and repetitive power (speed). The idea in our testing is to provide real-world data which is quantifiable and repeatable.

Power

MAC Tools BWP151

Long before we received the first tool for the best cordless impact wrench shootout, we were analyzing and brainstorming to determine the best avenue for power testing on impact wrenches. In short, we didn’t find anything that existed. So, we built our own rig. While it may not look like much, there are months and months of drawings, fabrication, cutting, re-thinking, un-fabricating, and re-fabricating. Then came the testing, and back through the grind again.

There are many reviews and head-to-head impact wrench tests that already exist. Most of these tests include the Skidmore Wilhelm torque testing equipment. By turning a large nut, you raise the needle on the PSI gauge. Then, dividing by a factor provides a “torque” number. While these tests do a great job at validating (or not) manufacturer calculated numbers, we felt there were better ways to demonstrate raw power. In short, we weren’t satisfied with doing the same ol’ same.

Introducing the TorQ-O-Matic 5000

Our rig combines the front wheel of a car/truck with a weighted sled like those typically seen at tractor-pulls. Although our STR TorQ-O-Matic 5000 testing rig results may not provide a number you can brag about, it does a great job at providing work that levels the playing field on these high torque cordless impact wrenches. As the impact wrench turns the rotor, the weight moves further up the ramp, providing more clamping force on the rotor via the caliper.

In addition to the pointer and scale on the TorQ-O-Matic 5000, we also validated these numbers by using our Proto 6232 torque multiplier in conjunction with our digital torque wrench. The Proto 6232 uses a 1/2” input, with a 1” output delivering 18.5 times more torque and 18.5 times less RPM.

Leading the pack in driving the weight up the scale is the Milwaukee 2767 (Gen 2) cordless impact wrench. While all the others can’t max the scale with 50-pounds atop, the 2767 can. In fact, we had to add 10 more pounds, a total of 60, and the Milwaukee 2767 still drove it the majority of the way. DeWALT and the Ingersoll Rand followed a pretty close second at 94% and 92% of the Milwaukee in the power category.

Repetitive Power (Speed)

In addition to just max power, we also want to determine the best tools for doing your typical repetitive work. This is not intended to mimic NASCAR pitstops, but it’s more likely what you face each day in the shop or your job.

We used a 10-inch x 10-inch I-beam made with 1/2” (.470) steel. The I-beam has ten (10) grade 8 hardened bolts with a 7/8” diameter inserted, along with appropriate nuts and washers. The torque specification for this size bolt is 454 pounds. This means that at 454 ft-lbs of torque, the bolt is in its elastic or stretched state. We pushed the limits a bit and torqued all ten bolts to 500 ft-lbs for each impact wrench.

Grip It -N- Rip It

Using each impact wrench, we used a stopwatch to gauge how long it took each impact to loosen all ten nuts. We weren’t interested in running the nut all the way off. We just wanted to break it free, then move to the next. We weren’t concerned with long-term RPMs, but rather how well it did repeating an everyday task.

The winner in the speed testing was the Milwaukee Gen 2 (2767) at just 11.7 seconds to loosen all ten 500 ft-lb nuts. Makita took 2^nd place taking only 12.6 seconds, with Matco and Ingersoll Rand tieing for the 3^rd spot (13.1 seconds).

Value

DeWalt DCF899 MSRP $349

Value is not a one-trick pony either, so we have more in the value calculation than just price. The MSRP or price plays a really big role in value, but also included are warranty and features.

Prices

The tool company brands found in the big box stores seem to be competitive and in the $350-$500 range. DeWalt is the cheapest at $349 followed by Bosch and AC Delco Tools at $395 and $399, respectively. On the other end of the spectrum, MAC and Matco remain the most expensive at $569 and $699, respectively.

Warranty

Just because you have the most powerful cordless impact wrench, it doesn’t mean it will last forever. While it doesn’t guarantee longevity or durability, it is nice to know that tool companies stand behind their tools. The New Milwaukee M18 FUEL Impact Wrench secures the top spot including warranties with 5-years of coverage on both of their high-torque impacts (2763 and 2767). Four manufacturers include 3-year warranties: DeWalt, Ingersoll Rand, MAC, and Makita. Matco Tools is the bottom-dweller here with just an 18-month warranty, according to their customer support center.

Ergonomics

Most Ergonomic – Bosch HTH181

As one of the few subjective areas of our testing, we do our best to still quantify our results by including many users and data logging the results. Even though cordless tools are getting a bit smaller and lighter, due to technology, the cordless impact wrenches still have some weight and girth. Using a heavy tool can be a real pain, so it makes sense to place value on the fit and comfort of such a tool. More than just weight, balance, and vibration also play into our testing.

Across the board, the Bosch HTH181 wins for being the most ergonomic, and this was almost unanimous from our users. Milwaukee’s Gen2 (2767) and Ingersoll Rand’s W7150 tied for second in ergonomics. The Ingersoll Rand is also the lightest of the bunch, weighing just 6.88 pounds with the 5.0 Ah battery. Bosch and DeWALT followed in a close 2^nd and 3^rd, at only 7.04 and 7.10 pounds, respectively. The heaviest tool in the batch is the Matco Tools at 8.02 pounds, with the 4.0 Ah battery.

Feature Set

Most Feature Rich – Milwaukee 2767 Gen2

When we look at features, we want to determine what any impact should have, as well as highlight any features that set certain tools apart. We look for LED work lights, variable speed triggers, multi-speed or single speed motors, brushless technology, and more.

Leading the pack in our best cordless impact wrench shootout for feature set is the Milwaukee 2767 (Gen2). This makes a lot of sense since it is the newest high-torque impact to hit the market. In a three-way tie for second are the AC Delco Tools, DeWALT, and MAC Tools high torque impact wrenches.

One of the features on the Milwaukee 2767 that stood out is the “Bolt Removal” mode. This was not found on any other impact wrench we tested. On the push-button speed selection at the base of the impact, you can select 1-3. Setting 1 is the slowest and 3, the fastest. The fourth selection is the “Bolt Removal” mode, indicated by a circular arrow designation. When this mode is selected, the user holds their finger on the trigger—once the fastener breaks loose, the Milwaukee senses this and slows the RPM to just 750 to finish removing the nut. This keeps the nut from flying across the shop.

Criteria

Performance is always our highest weighted category in our calculations. Power and repetitive power (speed) are the major contributors to performance. From there we also consider ergonomics, feature set, and value into the overall score. Each impact wrench is measured based on 100 possible points.

As we tally up all the numbers, the cream of the crop seems to include seven (7) of the nine impact wrenches. Yes, the numbers show a winner, but as stated in the beginning, any of the top seven perform well enough to get the job done quickly and proudly.

Bottom Line

Just because this Bosch HTH181 finished in 9^th place doesn’t mean that it’s not a good fit for our users out there. Sure, it doesn’t have the power of the rest, but it still has 500 ft-lbs of torque, and it really didn’t have any trouble breaking free the 10 nuts in succession, torqued at 500 ft-lbs.

The Bosch only missed the next place by two points and there were several others within ten points. IF comfort and ergonomics are important, or you already have the Bosch platform and batteries, then this could be a good option for you. At only $395, it also falls on the cheaper side of the bunch as well.

In short, we think the Bosch suffers from seven years with no updates. At the same time, it’s pretty impressive that a tool released in 2010 is still battling in the best cordless impact wrench shootout.

Bottom Line

If you have the Matco MCL2012HPIWK impact wrench, then you should be proud of it. It won’t leave someone stranded by not doing work. In fact, when using the Matco Tools impact, it felt like it hit the hardest initially when removing a fastener, and this showed in our speed test. It does lack in the total power department, but that’s not the real reason this impact finished in 8^th place.

Many of the points for the Matco Tools impact is lost in the value department, including price and warranty. It was the highest priced of the shootout, by more than $100 ($699 MSRP). It really doesn’t have the features or output to explain the huge price. In addition, the warranty period is only 30 days. Compare this to 5 years with Milwaukee. In the end, the Matco Tools MCL2012HPIWK finished with 70.2 total points.

One of the pros and cons about the AC Delco Tools ARI2002 is that it finished in the middle of the pack for most testing and categories. It didn’t really finish in the top in power, but it didn’t finish in the bottom either. In the end, the points just didn’t swing in the way of this impact.

This is still no impact to be ashamed of. In fact, some of the testers really like the ARI2002, and they even ranked it in their favorites for ergonomics. It’s smooth to run and didn’t have any trouble running off the ten nuts at 500 ft-lbs. The final tally for the AC Delco Tools ARI2002 is 77.6 points.

When it comes to the Makita XWT08, you can’t go wrong with this purchase. While it finished sixth with 78.7 points, only nine points separated 2^nd to 6^th. If you are Makita fan, then you’ll be proud to own the XWT08 as well. Power is ample, and it finished 2^nd in real-world testing, with the repetitive power (speed) I-beam test, running off all 10 nuts in just 12.6 seconds.

One issue noticed by a couple of the testers was the placement of the reversing switch. The switch seems to be right in the path of your trigger finger. Sometimes, when trying to go fast, the forefinger would push the switch into the neutral/locked position. This didn’t happen all the time, and it seemed to only be noticeable to those with larger hands.

Bottom Line

Many mechanics probably have the MAC Tools BWP151 in their tool arsenal, and rightly so. This is a very powerful impact gun, and it shows. In the end, the MAC BWP151 finished with 81.4 points in our shootout. In the power category, it and the DeWALT finished neck and neck, in 3^rd and 4^th place, so it delivers plenty of power. The MAC Tools impact should have done much better in our speed (repetitive power) testing, but it seemed to have a fraction of a second longer lag, from the time you pull the trigger until the gun starts.

Furthermore, the higher price of the MAC cost it some points as well in our value calculation. If you’re looking for power and performance, then the MAC BWP151 may be a great choice for you. As the cousin to the DeWALT, they both share “Made in the USA with Global Materials”, so we can all applaud this.

DeWALT secures a solid place, just outside of the podium, scoring 85.7 points. Many will choose, and have chosen, the DeWALT DCF899, and they won’t be let down. The black and yellow high torque impact not only finished 3^rd in our power testing, but it’s also the cheapest, at only $349 for the full kit.

While the DeWALT tied for 2^nd for features, it did suffer just a bit in the ergonomics category. With ergonomics being a more subjective testing category, users probably need to put the tool in their hand to make their own decision. If you have other DeWALT tools or you think you’re leaning to the DCF899, it’s easy to yes to this impact wrench. Furthermore, you can find the DeWALT stuff about anywhere tools are sold, making it easy for purchase.

The fact that the Milwaukee 2763 Gen 1 high torque now has a stronger big-brother, but still finished 3^rd deserves big kudos. In fact, receiving 86.1 points, it only misses 2^nd by 0.3 points. While some others above suffered by finishing mid-pack, this is actually a plus for the Milwaukee. The difference is, the 2763 didn’t drastically fall short in any area, like the others. Even though the price is higher than several, with it’s 5-year warranty, features, and ergonomics, it’s still a great value.

The Milwaukee 2763 has very few notable faults. One issue is that the work light LED is just under the front of the impact. Commonly, users will use their other hand to brace the front of the impact, this will block the LED so it’s nearly useless. The 2763 delivers great power, and it did well in our speed test as well. Milwaukee sets itself apart with the 5-year warranty, and you can buy it online, your tool store, or in the big box stores.

Finishing in the Runner-Up position (2^nd place) is the Ingersoll Rand W7150. The fact that this is nearly a 5-year-old tool deserves huge props for fighting past these other great entrants. It finished a solid 2^nd in power testing and 3^rd in repetitive power (speed) testing. It’s the lightest tool of the bunch, weighing only 6.88 pounds, with the 5.0 Ah battery intact.

Where the Ingersoll Rand did suffer a bit is in the feature set area. This is where the age of the tool showed. There is no worklight, it’s only a single speed/mode, and it has a brushed motor. We would love to see a remake of this gun, using the great features as in our review of the Ingersoll Rand W5132 Cordless Impact Review. If Ingersoll Rand will release a new 1/2” high torque, with a brushless motor, multi-speed features, and the halo LED worklight, then first place may be much closer.

The REAL Best Cordless Impact Wrench Bottom Line

Summarizing a shootout always presents a problem. The real bottom line to this best cordless impact wrench shootout seems to hang solidly on power and performance. Milwaukee aimed to hit hard with the release of the 2767 high torque impact back in September. The results show their efforts seemed to have paid off. There’s been a ton of hype over this tool since the Milwaukee Tool NPS17 media event in Milwaukee, WI back in May.
