Brushless DeWalt Combo Kit Features

Both the impact driver and hammer drill are powered by a brushless motor, which delivers more power and runtime than brushed motors. The 2 amp-hour and 4 amp-hour batteries included in this DeWalt combo kit provide more than just runtime increase. The 2Ah pack serves as a “slim” battery, so you can fit into tighter spaces, either on the drill or impact.

DeWalt DCF887 Brushless Impact Driver

We tested the DeWalt impact driver on our I-beam with large bolts and nuts. The nuts were torqued down to 150 ft-lbs, 175, 200, and then 250 ft-lbs. At each step, the DCF887 impact driver loosened all five fasteners, without an issue, until the last. At 250 ft-lbs, the DeWalt DCF887 impact was not able to loosen the nuts, but we didn’t expect it. After all, this impact is only rated at just over 150 ft-lbs, so loosening 200 ft-lb nuts is above-average.

This DCF887 impact driver has 3 power modes and a variable-speed trigger, providing 0-1,000; 0-2,800; and 0-3,250 RPM. Furthermore, max torque for each mode is 240, 1,500, and 1,825 IN-LBS. Impacts per minute max out at 3,600 (IPM). Three LED lights surround the bit, casting light all around the fastener.

All Steel Knurled Toolless Chuck

Using a 2″ hole saw, we tested the DCD796 drill in a typical 2×4 stud. The DeWalt drill has no problem churning the bit through in one pass. After a few holes with the hole saw, we changed it out for a 1/4″ Bosch Multi-Purpose bit for a little hammer-drill action in concrete. With a quick turn of the clutch ring to the ‘hammer’ symbol, we were ready for action. Again, the DCD796 brushless hammer-drill had no problem burying the 1/4″ bit as deep as we wanted to go.

The LED light on the DCD796 is unlike that of the DCF887. This LED shines from the base, near the battery, up toward the area of work. It does a decent job of providing enough light for the work at hand. Users can also choose to switch the light to task-light mode, and the LED will remain On for 20-minutes.

DeWalt’s all steel chuck does a great job at grasping drill bits. In addition, the knurling covering the outside of the chuck make toolless bit changes a breeze.
