Once 3/8″ air guns, (pneumatic impact wrenches), became available, automotive techs started snatching them up and using them wherever a 1/2″ air gun was overkill, not necessary, or too big for the area being worked in. Other than air ratchets where usually only the head is different, a 3/8″ air tool doesn’t need to be as large as its 1/2″ counterpart. The Makita sub-compact 3/8″ impact wrench is just a natural progression of this downsizing, except in the cordless powered variety of tools.
