If you follow us on social media or read our articles, hearing there is a 1,400 pound gorilla in the room is no surprise. If you don’t follow us, then I guess the gorilla needs explaining. The new Milwaukee M18 FUEL impact wrench, model 2767, has 1,400 ft-lbs of torque. From a cordless impact wrench! In addition to adding several hundred ft-lbs of torque, Milwaukee has also made the new generation M18 impact smaller.

Set to hit the shelves in September 2017, make sure you understand the details before pushing the order button. If you want the full 1,400 ft-lbs, then be sure to purchase the 2767, which includes the hog-ring (friction-ring) style 1/2″ anvil. The 2766 model, with the pin-detent anvil, only has 1,100 ft-lbs of torque. -That’s funny, “only 1,100 ft-lbs”, like that’s a small amount.-

New Milwaukee M18 FUEL Impact Wrench Features

Let’s get to the nitty-gritty. This 1,400 ft-lbs is breakaway, loosening, or nut-busting torque. On the tighten mode (righty-tighty), the Milwaukee M18 FUEL impact wrench delivers 1,000 ft-lbs of torque. This is plenty enough torque to make them king of the hill, at this point anyway. Of all the cordless high torque 1/2″ impact wrenches on the market, this new M18 high torque is separating themselves by a gap of a few hundred ft-lbs.

There’s more to the new Milwaukee M18 FUEL impact wrench than just power. A new 4-mode drive control includes three (3) speeds, plus a bolt-removal mode. This new mode will deliver all the power to the fastener until it breaks free, then the tool will back down to only 750 RPM. Great idea for keeping lug nuts from zipping across the floor at 1,800 RPM.

In addition to making the second generation M18 FUEL impact wrench more powerful, Milwaukee shaved some inches as well. They not only want the performance of a heavyweight, they also want to be the most compact. It seems they have done just that. the new Milwaukee M18 FUEL impact wrench is about 0.7″ shorter than the competition’s hight torque impact, and more than 0.5″ than the Milwaukee FUEL older generation.

M18 Impact with One-Key

Still To Come Features

While the new Milwaukee M18 FUEL impact wrench 2766 and 2767 are set to release in September 2017, more M18 FUEL impacts will release later in 2017. Milwaukee is adding One-Key features to the new high torque impact, on both the 1/2″ and 3/4″ drive. One-Key is an app-enabled tool that allows the user to manage controls from their Smart device. The new Milwaukee M18 FUEL impact wrench with One-Key will allow the user to manage torque settings. You may be able to throw those torque sticks away and use the One-Key impact to torque lug nuts to your desired specs.  One-Key offers even more capabilities, and we’ll release this as the info comes. Look for it in a month or two.

Obviously, to reach these types of numbers, power is driven from a lithium ion batter and brushless motor. In particular, the 2767-22 kit includes the new Milwaukee M18 FUEL impact wrench, two (2) 5.0Ah Redlithium Lithium-Ion batteries and a charger. The Powerstate brushless motor and Li-Ion battery links together with the Milwaukee Redlink Plus intelligence, allowing communication between tool, battery and charger.

Pro Tip: 1,400 ft-lbs may not be needed for the majority of your work, and this is totally understandable. It may make more sense to carry a lighter tool like the Mid-Torque. Check out our video review of the Milwaukee 2860 Mid-Torque Impact Wrench.

Our Thoughts

Get here already! Does that summarize our current feelings? We are waiting with anticipation, and not much patience, to get the new Milwaukee M18 FUEL impact wrench in our hands, so we can feel this new found power.

Will this end or replace pneumatic? Very doubtful. We don’t feel that air (pneumatic) will disappear anytime soon, BUT cordless is definitely on the rise as being the go-to. As news spreads on this new Milwaukee, it’s set to be a big hit. If the power numbers are correct, it’s a real monster.

It seems we have a point in the industry where cordless impacts are breaching the strength of 1/2″ anvils. With the friction-ring anvil at 1,400 ft-lbs but the pin-detent at only 1,100, this tells the tell that the anvil must be the weak point. We’ll talk with the Milwaukee engineers to confirm our assumptions, and we’ll be sure to follow up. One thing is for sure, cordless is reaching the heights of pneumatic in power.
