K Tool International (KTI) recently introduced the new K Tool International 1/4-Inch Straight And Angle Die Grinders for smoothing out welds, eliminating rust, and cutting sheet metal.  Both grinders are designed for the professional with 1/2 horsepower, a 1/8- to 1/4-inch collet, a 22,000 RPM free speed, and a safety trigger.

Other notable features include composite housing, a rear exhaust system, and a 1-year repairable warranty. Be sure to check the speed rating of your bits to be sure they can be used with your die grinder.

Our Take

As rotary tools go, die grinders probably don’t get as much use as their bigger, higher horsepower, and lower RPM angle grinder counterparts (not to be confused with the angle die grinder of this article), especially with the proliferation of CNC machining, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t tasks for which they are perfectly suited. They can get in smaller spaces and do finer work than their big brothers, and so machinists, automotive Pros, metal workers, and even artists need them.

A quick glance at the new K Tool International die grinders is all you need to see a marked departure from KTI’s other die grinders. The two-toned composite overmold, standing in contrast to the metal bodies of the previous offerings, will almost certainly add to the comfort in the hand as well as reduce vibration during the work. However, the tool body has a curious raised circle protruding from it that we suspect is the air pressure regulator. It looks like it might get in the way of the grip, but we hope it doesn’t. But we certainly like the safety trigger and rear exhaust.

At 1/2 horsepower, KTIs new die grinders are near the high end of the typical die grinder power range and thus will likely be able to handle all the tasks you can throw at it: smoothing welds, removing surface rust, fabricating metal and other materials, cutting off, and much more. Always wear appropriate PPE when you work!
