ESAB Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 60i Plasma Cutter

ESAB Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 60i Plasma Cutter

Esab recently introduced the 60 amp ESAB Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 60i Plasma Cutter featuring the SL60QD 1Torch, an output of 7.6 kW, duty cycle of 50% at 60 amps and 100% at 40 amps, four modes: cut, gouge, latch, and rapid-auto-restart for expanded metal, a weight of 37 pounds, and a 4-year warranty. This multi-voltage, single phase cutter is recommended for 5/8-inch steel at 19 IPM and has a sever capability of 1-1/2 inches.

Our Take

When you have the skill and tools to cut metal, a world of possibilities opens up to you in the form of custom fabrication, repair, restoration, and even CNC machining. You can build up, tear down, remove weak welds, replace damaged parts, rip metal, and really make just about anything when plasma is created by sending a current through compressed air.

Sure, you could use a band saw or a grinder with a cutoff wheel for some of the same tasks, but a plasma cutter is really the most versatile and capable tool for metal cutting applications…besides just being cooler. And it does it all without leaving behind a big mess, although there is typically some crystallized metal – called dross – left attached to the back of the cut. The ESAB Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 60i Plasma Cutter is meant to pack a big punch in a portable package, and the response so far seems to be overwhelmingly positive.

Small and Light, Yet Durable and Powerful

ESAB Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 60i Plasma CutterThis plasma cutter’s small form, relatively light weight, roll cage design, and multiple handles are all backed up with an IP23S protection rating which will allow it to stand up to the tough shop environment as well as transport and field work. Its inverter technology with automatic voltage detection has Power Factor Correction (PFC) to avoid damage and performance interruption when powered by inconsistent generators.

Displays and Indicators

We really like the bold, bright display that tells us all the information we need to know: dials and indicators for standard cutting, expanded metal cutting, arc gouging, and purge; amperage, air pressure optimization indicator based on lead length, and trigger lock. And that’s not all: perhaps the most helpful indicator is the end of life indicator for consumables. Now the purists among us will likely regard this as a “dummy light” on the dashboard – they know when the electrode is eroding or the nozzle is ovaled from the blowback and poor cut quality. But it might come in handy for the new guys. Whether that’s helpful or not, it is nice to know that the “QD” in SL60QD 1Torch stands for “Quick Disconnect” – with a simple twist, you can remove the torch for the lead for replacement without throwing the whole thing out.

The long arc length that can reach through 1-1/2-inch steel is also capable of handling those odd angles and corners without leaving material behind or failing to complete the cut. And thank goodness the water trap is external – no more tearing the cutter apart to drain the trap like other models. All things considered, the ESAB Thermal Dynamics Cutmaster 60i Plasma Cutter looks quite impressive and we’re ready to see if it makes the cut in practice – although, from everything we’ve read and seen, it’s more than capable!
