Where’s the tungsten? Where are my welding gloves? Just a couple of the questions that seem circulate the shop on a routine basis. Why? Because our welding cart just didn’t make the cut. Sure, it held the welder, but that’s about it. So, we took matters in our own hands to build a DIY Welding Cart. And, not just any cart, but we used a full 36-inch HART 6-drawer toolbox.
DIY Welding Cart – HART Toolbox Features
Many other DIY welding cart projects that we researched used smaller boxes, but that just didn’t seem to fit what we’re after. We not only wanted to mount the Miller welder, but we also wanted to mount our HyperTherm 45XP Plasma Cutter as well as parts, supplies, and PPE for each. Walking through Walmart one late night, I spotted the HART36TR6XD toolbox for $332. This is exactly what I was looking for in a welding cart box. 36-inches wide, 24.5-inches deep, and roughly 38-inches tall (stock height — but we’ll change this).
The top 5 drawers include roller-bearing slides that support up to 100-pounds for each drawer. The bottom drawer includes double slides on each side, supporting up to 200-pounds for this drawer. Furthermore, the 5-inch rubber casters support more than 1,200-pounds. In no way are we going to eclipse this amount of weight, but it’s nice to know the HART box can handle it. Each drawer also includes the soft-close feature that keeps the drawers from slamming shut.
Building the HART Welding Cart
We pretty much left the HART toolbox alone aside from removing the casters and removing the handle. Using one 24-foot stick or 1″x2″ 14ga rectangle tubing and one 20-foot stick of 1/8″x6″ flat bar, we welded up an exoskeleton. Creating a shelf on the front and rear allowed us to re-mount the existing casters in these new spots. This allowed the box to be lowered several inches, getting the look we were after. We really like the look and function of our new HART DIY welding cart. Also, the HART 36TR6XD toolbox is warrantied for 3-years as well.
