The 2020 Toyota Supra looks to reignite the past by bringing back the sport (and expensive) sports car. Toyota expects it to make its way into the market in summer 2019 with the other 2020 models.

A Brief History of the Toyota Supra

The Supra was one of the pricier cars in the Toyota sports car lineup, but also likely the fastest. It came with a twin-turbo six cylinder engine that could move 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds and reach a top speed over 150 mph. By the time 1996 rolled around, the $40,000+ price tag was too much and sales dwindled away.

Well, Toyota’s been hinting at it for years, but at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, they finally quit being so coy about the details.

What Can We Expect From The 2020 Toyota Supra?

With the newest edition of the Supra, Toyota aims for appealing to true driving and sports car enthusiasts with a finely-tuned two-seater that blends power, precision, and agility. It will available in two grades: a 3.0, and a 3.0 Premium.

It features a rear wheel drive design, and by moving the engine as far back and as low as possible, the Supra achieves a low center of gravity and a 50:50 front/rear weight distribution for neutral cornering balance.

And speaking of the engine, the new Toyota Supra comes with a 3.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged inline six-cylinder. It produces 335 hp and 365 ft-lbs of torque.

The 3397 lb Supra, with its quick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission, can run 0-60 in 4.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph. To date, the new Supra is the quickest Toyota production vehicle ever made.

The Supra will also offer plenty of other engineering upgrades to increase performance. These include redesigned aerodynamics, a rigid chassis, and adaptive suspension.

It even features two distinct driving modes: Normal and Sport. Sport mode reduces the intervention of the stability and traction controls, sharpens up the throttle response, increases steering weight, improves the transmission shift response, cranks up the active differential tuning, and de-muffles some of the exhaust sounds.

The Look

Fortunately, Toyota is leaving its 1980’s styling back where it belongs. They’re giving the 2020 Toyota Supra a sexy, modern look. Though the opinions are split, some members of our team liken its style to something from BMW or Porshe. To each their own.

The Price

This certainly isn’t a Camry and the Supra will still carry a high price tag starting around $51,000. That’s in the same range as BMW’s Z4 and the Mercedes SLC Roadster but about $6000 under a Porsche 718.

That begs the question as to whether or not Toyota can effectively draw drivers away from those iconic brands.

It’s a gamble that they’re confident will pay off.
