It’s no secret that the typical construction site is home to a whole lot of silica dust. So much dust, in fact, that OSHA has a whole slew of brand, spanking new regulations regarding employee exposure to silica dust. Although the new regulations were proposed a while ago, it has only been recently that they’ve gone into effect. During this in-between time, Makita had the good sense to get on the front foot with all the new OSHA regulations coming down the pipe, and they’ve been researching and developing all sorts of solutions to silica dust inhalation.
One such solution to the silica dust problem comes by way of the Makita 18V X2 Rotary Hammer. Inherently violent and messy, rotary hammers are often some of the worst offenders for creating breathable silica dust. While it’s unlikely that fact will ever change, just by the nature and purpose of the design, Makita has found a way to isolate and contain the created dust. In this case, the solution is even cordless.
What Makita Has To Say About It
“Our vision is a cordless job site, and the XRH07 is a battery-powered rotary hammer that breaks new ground for contractors, without compromising performance. 18V X2 battery technology gives users the performance they would expect from the equivalent 1-9/16” corded rotary hammer, and with AWS there is wireless connectivity with the equipped dust extractor that enables power-on/off communication at the pull and release of the trigger. We’ve also incorporated our Advanced AVT which provides significantly less vibration, present in our premium line of Rotary Hammers. This is a remarkable engineering achievement and a great solution for contractors.”

Cordless Convenience That Keeps OSHA Off Your Back
The Makita 18V X2 Rotary Hammer joins the company’s ever-growing stable of cordless tools that run off of 36V (18V x 2). This 1-9/16″ Cordless rotary hammer also comes packed with a variety of features that are sure to make your hammering experience as clean and comfortable as possible.
For one thing, this rotary hammer syncs up with Makita’s 18V X2 LXT HEPA Dust Extractor wirelessly. It features Makita’s AWS (Auto-Start Wireless System) tech, which uses Bluetooth to wirelessly power on and power off the synced dust extractor as the tool gets used. In addition to the convenience of cordlessness, this set-up also eliminates a lot of the noise that comes from a constantly-running extractor.
The new rotary hammer also features Makita’s enhanced Anti-Vibration Technology (AVT). An internal counterbalance system cuts down on jarring vibrations and increases the overall comfort for the user. It does this in three ways. For one, the AVT features an air actuated counterbalance which directs air pressure to counterweight pistons that move the opposite direction of the drive piston. It also utilizes a vibration-absorbing housing, which moves independently from the motor and drive mechanism, effectively isolating vibration. Finally, an integrated damper spring at the base of the impact bolt absorbs vibrations from the bit.
