Setting the depth of cut can be a two-stage approach. You can release the lock lever, then move the guard up and down to the desired depth. Then, using the micro dial, you can fine-tune the depth to your desired setting.

We used some round over bits and straight cut bits to make several cuts through pine, poplar, and oak. We were impressed with the performance from this little 18V Ryobi P601.
